SLURRY SEAL
Using
REDA BITUMEN EMULSION

Slurry seal is a cold mixed and cold spread mixture of an emulsion, sand, water, and fine aggregate with or without a filler.  Three different types of slurry seal are used, depending upon the maximum size of aggregate to be used.

Materials to be used:
For slurry sealing, slow setting emulsions shall be used:

            SS-1h         Anionic slow setting emulsion
            CSS-1h       Cationic slow setting emulsion

The type of emulsion to be used shall depend upon the chemical composition of the surface to be treated as well as on the chemical composition of the aggregate to be used.   Generally, a cationic emulsion is favourable as the setting time is generally reduced.

Sand and Gravel:
- The physical properties of the sand are following the requirements of the actual specification.
- The aggregate shall be preferably crushed (actual requirement: 85% crushed particles).
- The sand equivalent should be above 55%.
- The gradation shall follow one of the three types as outlined in the relevant specification.

Filler:
- If filler is required, it shall comply with the relevant specification (normally, Portland Cement type).

Emulsion:
        SS-1h
        CSS-1h

Following the requirements of ASTM D977 (anionic) and ASTM 2397 (cationic).  The emulsions shall be chosen after the type of aggregate is determined.  Emulsions shall be tested according to the relevant specification.

Slurry Seal:
- A mixed design for the slurry seal must be submitted following the tests and procedures as outlined in the relevant testing procedures.

Emulsions:
- Emulsion shall be tested in accordance with the relevant specification.
- The contractor shall submit a certificate for each shipment stating that the emulsion complies with the requirements of ASTM D977 or D2397 (depending upon type of emulsion).  The cationic or anionic type of emulsion shall be chosen after the quality and chemical composition has been determined for the surface to be treated, as well as for the aggregate to be used.
